Well, I have avoided this in the past, for a number of reasons, but I have been collecting stats for this site approximately every month since the beginning of the year. Would any of you be interested in seeing these? If you do, perhaps you could tell me how to decypher them! I have a number of methods of gathering the web stats, and they all seem to give different results - sometimes fairly similar, sometimes wildly different. In general, I dont believe web stats at all, but they can make interesting reading occassionally.
(I know. An update is on the way as soon as I can sort it out. Thanks for your patience.)

The usual kind of thing. The number of visitors, the number of views for each page, who links to the site the most each month, that kind of thing.

Me too! ;D OK, take these with a real large handful of salt, as I cant guarantee that they are accurate. Month
| Hits
| Visits
| Avergae Visits per Day
| October
| : 177139
| : 7186
| : 231
| September
| : 100628
| : 4975
| : 165
| August
| : 118755
| : 4244
| : 136
|
Hits - the number of pages viewed Visits - the number of individual people, irrespective of how many pages they looked at. As you can see, we are actually doing pretty well! ;D

4000+ people are visiting a month! I didn't know the site was doing that well. If just 1% of those people joined that would be over 40 extra members!
Why was October such a good month?
Do you notice any increase in hits when there is a renewed front page?

Yes, I am very happy with the numbers. So happy that there is a large part of me simply not believing them! I cant find anything wrong with them though. In fact, I have a couple of methods of calculating the stats for the site, and this is the generally the lowest number set.
October so good? Simple, that was the month the the Games Day update went online. The difference is incredible and word gets around very quickly. We had referals from places such as other forums (a load in German for some reason!), various email groups (including for Warmaster and Inquisitor) and home sites (Portent continues to give good hits). Still, as good as the GD coverage was for the site, you should have seen it when the Salute pictures went up! In that month, on the main Salute index page alone we had a quarter of a million hits (not visits). I mentioned this to someone, and his comment was 'shame you did not have pay-per-click' ads on that page'. D'oh, another missed opportunity! ;D
I have not looked at the hits after a new update. However, I do think that people would have to visit to find the update in the first place, so I dont know whether that you be a large number. I do actually get stats for each day, as well as each hour (over the whole month), which can indicate where people are coming from. We get a fair few visits from the States - that gives me an idea for a new thread!

Yes, I am vert happy with the numbers. But, it does lead to an interesting question. If there are over 4000 visitors each month, where exactly are they? Sure, that 4000 may include a load of repeats, but even if each person visits 3 times a day, every day of the month, that is still over 400 people. And yet these forums have the same people posting and do not seem to grow very quickly. It puzzles me a lot and causes sleepless nights. Anyone with any ideas/solutions?

Some of those figures could be my fault. I somatimes vist a good ten times a day to see if any new threads have started, or if anyone's replied to my threads etc etc... *edit* Princepts... *edit*

*edit* Princepts... *edit* Just one more left to discover then! ;D OK, so if everyone loged in ten times each day, that would 300 a month. 4000 divided by 300 is... reaches for calculator... hmmm... 13 people. Suddenly, it is all making more sense!

Thats sounding more like the stats on my site. i log in here 4/5(+) times a day, even before I was signed on for the forum just to see whats going on on our "Sister site" My stat counter logs people per day. It registeres their IP and only counts them once every 24 hours. It saves pondering how many actual people I have in. Now, if they happened to be logging in from different computers throughout the day.... I'm screwed......Oh well..web stats are always going to be open to interpretation. Having said that - Your site is still booming for the area it covers - be proud Ian!

That's right Tuff. We dont do this for the fame and fortune, do we.... do we? ;D
It is good to hear that you check my site as often as I check yours. Incidently, you might be interested in the next update... I will say nothing more, but keep an eye out. It should be around very soon (I know that I have been saying that for about a month now!).
I never bothered with Stats really, for exactly this reason. I only look now as they are provided for free.
As an aside, if people log in through university (as a lot of gamers do), we have to worry about DHTP - the same PC getting allocated a different IP address each time from a pool of addresses used by the university or other place!

Me again. I had a thought, and it does not happen very often so I want to make the most of it... When you guys say that you check the site a lot each day, do you link to the main page and then come here, or do you simply come straight here and not view any other pages? The reason that I ask is because these boards are run externally, and so hits and visits here are not registered at all. If a million people looked at the EpiComms forums, and four at the rest of the site, I would only know about the four. So, you can look here (without going to anohter page before or after) as many times as you like and it wont mess up the stats. (Desperately, trying to claw back the 4000 visitors! )

Sorry, the link I have takes me to the front page first, and then I click on Epicomms forum.
