OK, I am currently upgrading the Players Index, and I thought that I would put a couple of questions to you guys.
It is going all techy and done via an online database that you can search and add yourself to without me getting involved.
Right now, Epic and Gothic have check boxes if you play them, and there is a text box at the bottom to add any other games. What other games should be covered by check boxes? (The reason that I want check boxes for Epic, etc is so that a standard phrase is entered into the database. That way you can search for 'Epic' and not miss Space Marine players.) I was thinking about adding Warmaster, and possibly Blood Bowl and Necromuda as check boxes. And, before anyone asks, I am avoiding putting 40K and Fantasy Battle in this way as they dont need the support and the database is not really targetted at these games.
Also, I would like the Index to be available to other sites. So, if you go to various sites you will still have access to the database. But, this means that the colours have to fit all sites and no sites at the same time. So, what colours do you think would work well and would fit into a number of sites well?
Let me know. And thanx.

You wont need check boxes for fantasy etc anyway if there is a text thing at the bottom aswell, plus the people using it will be more interested in gothic and epic anyway.
I dont play Necromunda, blood bowl or warmaster anyway, so they wouldn't bother me. Others might like it though. They dont really fit the topic of this site though, well maybe Necromunda.
Colours? How do you mean? Each system has a colour representing itself?
In this case I would have green as epic, and blue for BFG, but this is because its the colours of my respective armies for them.
So for extra check boxes, Necromunda maybe and other space games (Kallistra etc).

I have been thinking about this for a while. For the games included, I have decided on Epic, the Titan games and Gothic. I will add Warmaster, since although it is a Fantasy game, it is still a different scale to the others. I thought about Necromunda and Inquisitor, but in the end decided that they were more campaign games, so they will need to be added to the text box at the bottom of the form.
For colours, I was more thinking about an overall colour scheme. I could use the same as for this site (dark blue and grey), but if the Players Index goes out to other sites as well then it wont fit in as well. Right now, the Players Index is a light blue/grey colour with black text. It should go online soon and you can have a look.

I like the idea of many sites using the same playerrs index. that can only lead to good things. Maybe if you went with some neutral colours (whites, blacks, pale blue/green) then it might fit in whereever it turns up (although it would look a bit odd compared to this site!) Whould the entrys be editable once they were made so we could add to them, or would we have to ask you to change them. Maybe an Age box could be on the form as an extra option.

The age box is a great idea. I will add it. I have gone for neutral colours in general, a pale blue/grey. (I could run a second Index using the same database and use the sites colours, that we way could be the only ones to have it fit in perfectly! ) Anyway, if it is going to go into other sites then it should at least try to fit in with them, even if that means that it does look a bit out of place here as well. I am afraid that editing (and deleting) is not possible. If I impliment this, then I would need to add a password so that only you can edit your own record, and that is getting too complicated. Each record does have a number, so you can create a new record and drop me an email with the number of the record that you would like me to delete - which I can do quite easily.

[this is the second time I have posted this, the first time i posted this in the wrong thread, D'oh ] After playing around a bit with the players index i have a few questions, suggestions. It it possible to have an option to browse the whole index. If a person just wanted to look to see if a person was nearby they would have to search for all the places nearby! Also would it be better to save space and just have the games that they do play reather then listing all the games they don't When you try to search for some one who plays BFG you have to type battlefleet gothic in to the search box rather then checking BFG and searching for "yes". That could confuse some people Apart from that it is great and seams to work fine. PS, the colour is fine

I thought about having an option to view the entire database, but the closest to this right now is to type in the country where you play, and then have the database list it alphabetically by area. Even the best travelled players probably dont need to know about other countries right away!
I dont get your point about listing the games that people dont play. Right now, a person just ticks boxes of the games that they play and adds other games they play at the end. You will need to clarify that point for me.
The whole thing about searching for a specific game, etc is confusing a few people. The trouble is, teh code just dumps all the options out nicely (I borrowed and modified the code from elsewhere), and so getting it to only do one or two of these is a bit more complicated. However, that is a feature which should be in version 2.1!
I am glad that you like the new Players Index (and the colours). Thanks for checking it out.
PS: Your point about simply typing 'yes' and checking the BFG box was actually how it used to work! I changed it because I wanted people to be able to look for 'gothic' and 'england', and not just be faced with a load of 'yes' and 'no' in the table.

I get your point about the "yes" thing, I wasn't thinking about all the options I dont get your point about listing the games that people dont play. Right now, a person just ticks boxes of the games that they play and adds other games they play at the end. You will need to clarify that point for me. What I ment was that after you have searched for people and their profiles pop up, it would save space to simply list wahat they do play only. However, after thinking this through it would be impracticle because if diffrent people played diffrent things the the tables would have to be diffrent sizes and would not look as nice.

OK. I have dragged the Players Index back into line with the rest of the site. Why have I done this? Well, there were a lot of comments stating that the resource would be great to be shared across a number of sites. I put in a reasonably neutral colour scheme to fit in with most other sites. I then emailed a number of sites to see if they would want to add a link. I got one reply (from Blackstone 6) politely saying that it would not fit their site. Fair enough. Anyway, I have changed it so that it obeys the 'proper' colour scheme, etc.
Can you guys check it out and make sure that I have not damaged anything while messing around with it?Thanks.

Its a shame that the other sites didn't want to know. Its still a great idea.
All appears to be fine with it. Its still working away. The only thing I could find was that if you entered "UK" and "England" you got 2 diffrent sets of results(with some in both). Its a minor point but I thought I would let you know.

Yes. I found this a while ago. The only way that I could find to put it right, and it happens with the US/States as well, was to have tick boxes in the same way as the editions of Epic, etc. But, I felt that it would discriminate against other countries, who would have to type in their country name all on their own. ;D
It works better if you search on the area instead of the actual country.
