OK, I am mainly a Chaos and Eldar player, and I am working on a couple of other fleets whihc will make their way over here as soon as I have the details sketched out a little more. However, I also like to buy a few other ships from most other races for one off games and a change, but I like to paint them coherantly, just in case I decide to expand and create an entire fleet (I want a look which is good for a fleet, not just a couple of lone ships). But, with so many ships and fleet colours, I am having a tough time working out what colour my new Imperial Cruisers should be. Most colours are taken, and I would like to know what 'works' for Imperial ships, and what doesnt.
I dont think that blue or red works very well for Imperials, and I would generally like lighter colours. So, what looks good?

I dont do Imperial personally, but If I was to start the colour that impressed me was the desert type scheme in the rule book. Can't remember the page its on, I think its got a picture of a space port by it. My younger brother went for a dark blue colour, mainky because he had a spray of the colour so it was quicker. It looks OK, but theirs something not quite right about it. He also sprayed his Blood angel ships red but no highlighting or details so they just look wrong.
Maybe a shadow grey base coat and drybrush to white? That might look alright, then give the ships names like purity and such.

I also like the 'desert camo' scheme in Warp Storm (and in the WD ads), but I think that it needs to be done really well to look good, and that an air brush would really help - and I dont have one.
The light grey was what I was going with until about a week ago, when I decided that I would collect an 'Alliance' fleet and that this would be grey, as you can add personal markings on top in any colour and it works. And, my Chaos fleet is green and my Marines are blue. So, that doesnt leave me with many options! I also saw a deep yellow scheme which was similar, but had black trim for the prow, etc, and this looked quite good, but I dont know if I would want a whole fleet like this.

I'm painting my Imperial fleet blue w/ white prows and silver trim (like the 'official' green, but subbing out blue for green, and silver for gold). It's hard to make look good--I think it's that blue tends to be so dark, so you've got to highlight up a decent bit. I'm thinking of changing the silver back to gold so it stands out a little more against the white. Blue also doesn't stand out well against black, which is another reason I think it's hard to do well, as it doesn't look as good on the table top.

The colours you describe Hrothgar, ar the same as my fleet colours They are Blue with white prows and Gold trims. At first I found out that the colous could be a bit dark but when all the lights are picked out in Red and the guns in Slver, they looked pretty good. On my earlier ships I painted them with a base coat of Enchanted blue followed by a dry brushing of Lightning blue. But recently I have been doing a base coat of Ultramarine blue and then drybrushing enchanted and Lightning blue.

These colours are also simlair to mine! (I quite like the way they worked out for me). You can see them at www.accesswave.ca/~gbevanThey did turn out a little dark but the yellow lights and silver trim really stand out. I decided to enhance them a little with the blue/white transition on the prows Good luck!

i've done mine base black, drybrushed to white through grey: which the metal parts picked out in gold. I've done the prows purple mixed with black, and a few little highlights in purple and white - with yellow trim: i've also bought a couple of sheets of blank decal/transfer paper - and used that to print out a number of tiny CRINAN DEFENCE FLEET and CDF - and stuck those on all my ships. I've also used that to print out my ship names and stuck these onto the prow of my ships as well. It looks pretty cool.
