Bases

This has been puzzling me a little lately, and I wondered if anyone can let me know what they do. As far as I know, there are two ways of getting bases to that presentable stage:
Sand and flock the strange textured waves method - I know little about this but I have seen it several times, it looks like sandpaper glued into small banks.
What do people do, how do they do it, and can they put some pictures here for me to look at?
Thanx.

Well, depending on the "type" of mini I have a different aproach on the base scheme. If the mini is part of a unit (lets consider any non skirmisher fantasy unit), first I decide what the general look of the army is going to have (like the colours or even the army theme) and then were would they "fit" (what kind of land would they be walking on). For exemple, if I wanted some unit to be in the mountains, having snow on the bases would be a very nice choice. If the mini can/must be on its one, but still belongs to an army list, I try not to get to far away from the scheme, but may add a little detail to it (like an arrow or a shield on the floor). If it is a mini whithout any "army references" I either give it a bigger base, or do a diorama with a couple more minis. For this "base-modeling" I use all sort of bits from the "bitz box" (were else? ), plasticard (that you can easily buy on every "modeling train" store, and modeling "pasta" if I want to do some rock or whatever. I would be pleased to post some pics but most of my convertions are fantasy so I'm not sure if it fits the site... Cheers A. Edit: Sorry for the long post...
