I know that this has been discussed many times in the past, but I am looking for a good way to base my Epic 40K infantry. At the moment I am simply using fine sand and painting it. This works OK, but I want a bit more definiation and quality. My gaming board is uniform green, so it needs to fit in there.

I used sand for my infantry when I first bought them (ages ago) it has started coming away now. I have used static grass for my 40k, would that be okay? I know it might look like they are in long grass, but its got a nice look to it. Other than that I use the multi coloured green flock, which is pretty good. I dont sp[end much time on bases, so this is a good way for me. Paint the whole thing snakebite leather (I'm talikng 40k again) and flock the top with the multi green flock.

I actually went out and bought some static grass a while ago. My problem is that I play Epic (where the grass may end up more like a wheat field) or Gothic (space fur?). I will give it a go with Epic, perhaps putting some in a mixer to cut it down a little. I will need to experiment and I am painting up a Tyranid test piece as quickly as I can to check colour scheme and other things - Hannible the Lictor! I will post a picture here when it is close to done.

This is what I do, and most of the times my bases blend into the Fields of Destruction.
Make a blend of water, orkbrown, sand and glue (my dictionary says "joiner's glue" (?), anyway, it is the stuff to glue pieces of wood together...). The consistency should be something like wet mud.
Paint your base (and use a old brush) with the mixture and emerge your base in sand for a minute or so. This has a twofold effect. 1. You get highlights for free. 2. The base is not flat any more. Let the paint dry.
Apply 3 spots of orkflesh:water (1:1) randomly on the base. Clean your brush and fade the edges of the green blobs with water. After drying this layer, highlight the spots by drybrushing with white:bilious green (1:1), no water. You do not have to be careful with the area. If you brush outside the green, your grassy spots will blend in even more.
Give your mini's and base a coat of varnish and your ready to role. My bases never lost their sand since epic 40k hit the market.
Best greetings,
Tijntje

That sounds like a good technique. I might try it on a couple of stands, but I dont see myself doing a load like that. I dont particularly spend much time on the bases of epic. Just paint and flock.
